Stress Reduction Techniques
Stress reduction techniques are
exercises that help keep your mind calm when you otherwise would be
buckling under pressure. Everyone feels stress and it is natural to
want to be rid of it as soon as possible. Fortunately, there are dozens
of exercises that can help anyone reduce their stress if they take the
time to learn and practice. Not all exercises can work for each person
so it is important to find what works best for you. If you are having a
hard time finding stress reduction techniques that work for you, don't
be discouraged, there are many more to try.
One of the simplest exercises is deep breathing.
Find a quiet place that has no distractions, close your eyes, and start
to focus on your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nose,
filling your lungs and opening your diaphragm to fill your entire chest
with air. Hold the breath in for a few moments then breathe it out
through your mouth in a slow and controlled manner. Once you have
finished start over, making sure to concentrate on feeling the air in
your chest and spreading through your body. Deep breathing has been
shown to help lower blood pressure, slow the heart beat, and put the
body into a state of relaxation. The best part of deep breathing is that you can do it anywhere!
Another free stress reduction technique is meditation. Meditating
can be as simple as closing your eyes and letting your mind wander
freely or it can be something as complex as making certain hand
gestures and whispering mantras. Almost everyone has a different
method of meditating and that is fine. The main goal of meditating is
to get your mind away from what is stressing you out. Some people
visualize going to a place that they find relaxing or comforting. This
helps them to "escape" from reality for awhile and just forget all
their worries.
Writing in a journal can help to relieve stress.
Some people find that writing their thoughts out can help them solve
problems as well. If you choose to write your thoughts and throw them
away immediately, that can still be very effective in managing stress.
These
are only a few stress reduction techniques that have helped other
people; if they do not work for you don't give up, just look for
others. If you want to live a balanced life then you need to have a healthy amount of stress.
