Building Healthy Relationships
Building healthy relationships is vital to having a balanced life with
low stress. If you are surrounded by unhealthy relationships, it is
just inviting stress, drama, and pain into your life. There are several
things you can do to help build healthy relationships with friends,
family, and other loved ones in your life.
The first thing to do is evaluate the relationships that you have in your life.
Which people in your life make you smile and bring happiness into it
when they are around? What about these people do you love? Figuring out exactly what you enjoy about them could help you to find others with the same traits.
It is important to do the opposite as well and decide who in your life
you don't like that much. Why don't you like them? Is it something you
could ask them to change while around you or is it always going to be
there? If they are in your life then there is a good chance that there
are good things to see in them as well; if so try to focus on the good rather than the bad.
Make
sure that all of the people in your life are aware of how you expect
the relationships to be. Being unclear about expectations is one common
mistake that can hurt relationships of any kind. Small
misunderstandings usually end up becoming much more if they aren't
taken care of. To build a healthy relationship it is important to "clear the air" of these misunderstandings while they are still just small problems.
Compromising with friends and family can is important. Be sure that you are making changes yourself and not only expecting others to be different. If
you only ask for change and aren't willing to change yourself, then
others may look at you as a hypocrite and not want to be around you.
Building healthy relationships has to be a two way street, with both
you and others willing to work to make it work. If neither of you are
willing to work a little for the sake of the relationship then it may
be time to reevaluate and move on.
