How to Make Healthy Eating Decisions

Healthy eating is really important to you and your family. Before you go to the grocery store, you need to start by making a list of all the things you need to purchase. If you want to, you can save your list for other shopping adventures. You should plan ahead so you can save time and money.

Make a list for your main courses and try to have at least three days of meals planned. When you go to the store, you will notice fresh foods, like meat and produce, on the outer aisles. They also have less processed foods in the outer aisles. The food in the center aisles are usually higher in fat and lower in nutrition.

You should always choose foods that are lower in fat, calories and sodium. If you buy sandwich meat then you should choose turkey or roast beef; they have a lot less fat and sodium than other types of meat. You can always choose food that has low-fat or fat-free on the labels. There are some foods that are healthier for you, like nuts, dried fruit such as apples, grapes or oranges, low-fat string cheese and individual size yogurt or applesauce.

Try to get only what is on your list and don't get the sale items that seem like a great bargain, they are usually less healthy. Portion size is great when you're trying to eliminate some of the bad eating habits your family has. If you have a large family you can buy family sized packs and freeze some of it for later.
