Balancing Your Life

A lack of balance in your life can cause you to struggle for hours on a project you need to finish, only to find that you have accomplished very little. You may feel that life is going on without you and that you do not have a clue how to get back on track. No matter how bad it gets, you will always be able to get your life back in order by establishing a balance between your work and the rest of your life.

Find a quiet spot, close your eyes to shut out any outside influences or distractions, inhale deeply, and take a good look at where you are. Also think about what you want to accomplish. Make a list of all of your commitments and the things you feel you need to do, and then prioritize them. Mark the ones that are the most time sensitive, and break down the large tasks into smaller ones, so they seem easier to accomplish.

If the list is too long, try to shorten it by analyzing the reason why each item is on the list. Any items that are not as important as the others can be omitted. What you desire and what you commit to should be in healthy proportion to each other. Take action on the most pressing tasks and check them off as you complete them. This will give you the reassurance that you are accomplishing the most important tasks and eases your frustration. Once you finish one of the more important tasks, then you can go on to the next most important.

Comparing yourself to others only causes stress, anxiety and self-condemnation. Balance is the key to gaining control and living a well ordered life, however, everyone must find his or her own balance. Try to gauge how much you can handle without overloading yourself.
